My Journey Through 1990s AJPW – Part 3: A Bitter Farewell

Hello everyone and welcome to part 3 of My Journey Through 1990s AJPW! This has been an interesting trip so far, and this stop sees the end to one of the most legendary rivalries in wrestling history, Genichiro Tenryu vs. Jumbo Tsuruta. With Tenryu leaving for NJPW and WWF, how will All Japan book his last match? Let’s find out!

Jumbo Tsuruta (c.) vs. Genichiro Tenryu – AJPW Triple Crown Championship Match – AJPW Champion Carnival 1990 Day 18 – 04/19/1990

In Tenryu’s final AJPW match of this run, he puts over Jumbo huge in a match that does everything right. Pre match, Stan Hansen attacks his former partner Tenryu, then challenges Jumbo to a title match. This is great, as it puts Hansen over using the talent leaving and sets up a huge title match down the line. Also, the attack makes it logical that this match would be relatively one sided. Then, when Jumbo checks on Tenryu, Tenryu slaps him, causing the match to be a heated brawl. Jumbo mostly dominates the match, hitting all his big spots throughout, while Tenryu is consigned to comebacks and hope spots, with him getting more offense as the match progresses. Jumbo looks super strong here, mostly dominating his greatest rival, while Tenryu looks good too, fighting back through Hansen’s attack and Jumbo’s biggest hits. The action here work’s to the match’s advantage too, as it is very hard hitting and stiff, playing up the bad blood and resilience. I also love that this match is pretty short, further putting over how awesome Jumbo is. Tenryu was very selfless on his way out the door, putting over Jumbo and even Hansen huge here. While this match isn’t great per se, the booking is brilliant and everyone comes out looking great in the end.
