WWE Wrestlemania XXXI Review
Welcome to the Wrestlemania XXXI review. Enough with the formalities let’s get this underway!
The show starts off with a freaking awesome video package. WWE always has great video packages and they are always a highlight. It starts off the show with a high.
Bad News Barrett vs. R-Truth vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Luke Harper vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Stardust vs. Daniel Bryan – Intercontinental Title Ladder Match
JESUS! What a way to start the show. There were some absolutely brutal and sickening bumps. Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper are the MVPs of this match, but everyone was great. Ambrose getting powerbombed by Harper and landing on his neck on the floor was horrifying. Bryan didn’t do that much, but its acceptable due to his injuries. He won and left the crowd happy. Now that’s how you start a wrestling show.
A pretty sweet hype video plays us into…
Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton
What a freaking match with an AWESOME finish. They started off hot with brawling, suicide dives, and some really crisp sequences. The Curb Stomp into a powerslam was a thing of beauty. Randy showed how talented and crisp he can be if he tries and Rollins pulled his weight tenfold. The interference worked and led to a very convincing near fall. Then the finish… words can’t describe it. That is what dreams are made of. I’m sure @SeniorLariato has the GIF for you to watch, so do that and come back. It was sooooooo awesome. This was a potential WWE MOTY and a MOTYC. Loved it.
Triple H and Sting are going on early. Two ‘manias in a row where Triple H goes on early. A pretty cool, if revisionist history, video plays us into…
Sting vs. Triple H – No DQ Match
Sting’s entrance was a thing of beauty. Not exactly sure what he has to do with Japan (maybe racist, I dunno), but it was still awesome. Triple H comes out to some weird terminator entrance. Pretty cool too! This match has some amazing pageantry. Triple H as cyberpunk Conan the Barbarian is SO COOL! Apparently it’s No DQ. That might help mask their age.
This match was a mess. It was overbooked, absolute chaos, but it was fun. This was just weapons and brawling and carnage. DX came out. The NWO came out. The only people missing were the Main Event Mafia. The really big issues that hindered this match were JBL’s constant pot shots at the dead and buried WCW. Why is that necessary? Also, Triple H winning shows how petty WWE is. Even 14 years after the death of WCW, WWE has to prove how much better they are. Come on. Sting shakes Triple H’s hand after the match. Blah.
An add for new WWE Network shows that seems like a complete parody of shows WWE may do. A cool segment follows this where Daniel Bryan is congratulated by the former WWE legends. Awesome. A song by some pop star or something that no one cared about follows that.
Paige and AJ Lee vs. The Bella Twins
Really slow part of ‘mania. I expected this to get the death spot between two big matches, but I guess not. This match was meh. They gave it a ton of effort, but no one cared and the psychology was just dumb. The heat was too long, Nikki hit her finish halfway through the match for a nearfall, and a shoulderblock was a more legit nearfall than Nikki’s finish. They finish got some heat with the steps and the Black Widow, but it was too little, too late. Just movez, and not even interesting movez at that. NEXT!
Next is a nice Hall of Fame recap followed by the Hall of Famers waving. That was a pretty great class, even if some duds (Bushwackers and Rikishi) got in. I’ve always liked this part of Wrestlemania. The only thing I have to say is get a physical Hall of Fame dammit.
Another video plays us into…
Rusev vs. John Cena
Rusev had the most stereotypical Russian entrance ever, with tanks. *****. This was a decent enough match. Rusev used some really fun suplexes and throws early on. Cena, of course, made the comeback and *gasp* overcame the odds. Rusev did beat up Cena for a while, which is good I guess. The crowd couldn’t be bothered, though, which takes away from the match. This was pretty good, but Cena is so bland that I can’t find a fuck to give.
Stephanie and Triple H announce the new Levi Stadium attendance record and gloat about how they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just WWE tooting their own horn. Rock comes out and essentially sets him vs. Triple H at WM 32 in stone. Then, out comes Ronda Rousey and beats up Triple H and Stephanie. This segment started out kinda bland, but it ended up awesome. I paraphrased this segment, so I guarantee it was better than I made it sound. Awesome.
No video here. We go straight to…
Bray Wyatt vs. The Undertaker
Some weird scarecrows follow Wyatt for his entrance. Not as great as the entrance last year, but it was acceptable. It’s still light out, though, which is a shame. Undertaker looks like a new man tonight. He is in such good shape. The match started slow, but I enjoyed it. Wyatt and Undertaker told a good story and had some sweet spots. The finishing sequence was awesome. Wyatt looked good, Undertaker looked young, and the crowd got into it. This match was so fun. I loved it, even if some other people didn’t. This was great.
A video package led us to our MAIN EVENT…
Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar
I just want to make it clear, I don’t hate Reigns, I hate his push. He has potential, but he is too green and isn’t ready. Now, lets see how the match is.
Reign’s entrance was hilarious. He had to trudge through 70,000 hostile fans to the ring. Middle fingers and boos galore. Immediately proceeding this is Lesnar getting a huge pop. This is what is wrong with WWE. Okay so this was essentially Cena vs. Lesnar from Summerslam blah, blah, blah. LETS GET TO THE COOL SHIT! Rollins cashes in and makes it…
Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins
Seth comes in and tried to kill Lesnar, but Reigns hits a spear on Lesnar, Rollins hits a Curb Stomp and wins the belt. AWESOME
Brock annihilated Reigns in this match and looked super strong. Reigns looked like the green rookie he is. Rollins gets the belt and becomes the biggest face in the company. Add in some awesome near falls and we have a great main event. #Rollinsmania.
Rating: ****1/4 (for the whole thing)
A really fun show that surprised the hell out of me. If you read the preview, I thought this show would suck, but, in fact, it was pretty good. I didn’t hate any of the big matches and 4 matches hit **** or higher for me. The flow was bad though, and the filler in the middle wasn’t appreciated, but this was good. When it comes to Reigns, we are just delaying the inevitable, but for now, VIVA LA ROLLINS!
Overall Rating: ***3/4
